The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry

Last night I watched a wonderful movie with my family, called “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry”.  It is a Christian film and I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

The following is a synopsis that I found on the internet that best describes it…

Best buddies Dustin, Albert, and Mark, are twelve year old boys looking forward to a summer of fun in 1970.

Dustin has a crush on Tanya and wants to ask her out on a date, something he has never done before. His main obstacle though is the town bully, Nick, who also likes Tanya. When Dustin mows the lawn of seventy-five year old Jonathan Sperry (Gavin MacLeod), a man he has seen at church, a unique friendship develops.

What happens the rest of the summer is something Dustin and his friends…will never forget.

But please, don’t let the part about Dustin having a crush, turn you away…I know some people don’t watch movies involving that kind of thing…it really is a WONDERFUL movie!

If you watch it, let me know what you think!

Breaking FREE from the chains of Bondage!

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us FREE (!), and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”  Galatians 5:1

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word ‘Bondage’?  Possibly someone physically tied with a rope or bound with chains?

That’s what I tend to think of…but physical bondage isn’t the only type of bondage…there is another, more dangerous, type of bondage.  Spiritual bondage.

The word ‘Bondage’ means ‘slavery; subjection; compulsory servitude’

So many people in this world are in some sort of spiritual bondage and don’t even realize it.  Others may realize it, but don’t know how to break free from them.  Below are some notes that I took from our church service August 29th.

The message was on ‘Walking at Liberty’.

What is walking at liberty?  Walking at liberty is walking DAILY with the Lord.

Sin brings us into bondage.

What are the keys to breaking the bondage?

1)     Truth – “And ye shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall make you

                    free.”    John 8:32

2)     Death to self/sin –   “What shall we say then?  Shall we continue in sin,

That grace may abound?  God forbid.  How shall we, that are dead to

sin, live any longer therein?  Know ye not, that so many of us as were

baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  Therefore we

are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was

raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also

should walk in newness of life.  For if we have been planted together in

the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his

resurrection:  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that

the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not

serve sin.  For he that is dead is freed from sin.”  Romans 6:1-7

3)     Broken Spirit / Broken & Contrite heart –  “The sacrifices of God are a

broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not

          despise.”  Psalm 51:17

4)     Confession – “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso

confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”  Proverbs 28:13

5)     Walk in the Light – “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye

light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in

all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable

unto the Lord.  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of

darkness, but rather reprove them.”  Ephesians 5:8-11

How Do I Defend Myself?

1)     By putting on the armor of God – Ephesians 6:10-18 –

Truth, Righteousness, preparation of the gospel of peace,

Faith, Salvation, Sword of the Spirit (word of God).

2)     Singing and praying to God – Remember Paul and Silas in the Prison?!

3)     Speaking to yourselves in Psalms – Ephesians 5:19-20, Psalm 25

There are still going to be ‘Cookie Jars’ (temptations) out there…Satan isn’t going to stop his attacks…in fact…they may come harder than before!

“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.”  2nd Corinthians 3:17

I hope I put this in a way that everyone can understand it, and that you can break the chains of bondage that are holding you and that you can be Walking at Liberty!!  I personally have been set FREE from chains of bondage in just the past month or so, and it has brought about a lot of changes and challenges in my life, but it is so worth it all in the end!!

May God Bless you as you continue to seek and serve Him!
