Who are you a slave to?

I’ve been reading through the book of Romans lately and today, as I was reading through chapter 6, something stood out to me that I hadn’t truly seen before.  I don’t know how many times I have read these verses, but it was almost like I was reading them for the very first time.

Starting in verse 20, it says:

When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.  What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of?  Those things result in death!  But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is what I wrote in my Bible about what stuck out to me:

“Being a slave to God results in eternal life; being a slave to sin results in death.  Either way you are a slave to something – let me be a slave to God!”

Now, when most people think of being a slave, they imagine someone standing over them with a whip, just waiting to strike them at any moment.  But let me tell you God is not like that at ALL!  Yes, He does disciplines His children – what Father wouldn’t?  But He is the best Master anyone could ever have!

So who are you a slave to?  This world and it’s temporal things?  Or are you a slave to God – serving Him in every possible way you can?
